De Utrechtse Middelbare Tijd (UMT) of Zonnetijd, zoals die in de negentiende eeuw werd bepaald, hoort bij de Meridiaan van Utrecht: 5° 07' 46.67" Oosterlengte. Deze zou dus 5° 07' 46.67" x 4 minuten = 5,1296° x 4 minuten = 20m31,67s moeten voorlopen op de GMT. In de winter is het verschil tussen UMT en MET zo'n 40 minuten, in de zomer 1 uur en 40 minuten.
